The parallel arrangement of the letters, numbers and symbols allows for easy and discreet testing of near vision acuity and determination which optotypes can be detected.
The chart is particularly useful in the diagnosis of perception and communication disorders (e.g. dementia)
Letters often become difficult first, then numbers and last the geometric forms if the names of concrete objects - window, ring, house, apple - are used.
